What is a Two-Way Radio?

A two-way radio (walkie-talkie) is a radio that can transmit and receive. This means you can talk on it and you can hear someone talking back to you on it. These radios come with a push-to-talk (PTT) button normally located on the side of the radio. When you press and hold in the button, you can talk to other radios. When you release the button, you can hear other radios respond back to you.

Two-way radio technology converts audio to radio waves. The radio waves are transmitted through the air and received by other radios which convert the radio waves back to audio.

Two-way radios operate between the frequencies of 30 MHz and 1000 MHz and the conversion to radio waves can be sent as an analog signal or a digital signal depending upon the specific radio being used. There are two classifications of two-way radios frequencies:

VHF (Very High Frequency) - 30 MHz to 300 MHz

UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) -300 MHz to 1000 MHz
